FROM PINEAPPLES TO ROCKET SHIPS

Long before rockets lit up the sky, Merritt Island was a quiet stretch of land surrounded by the Indian River Lagoon—home to Native Americans who lived off its rich waters.

Fast forward to the 1800s, and settlers arrived, planting citrus groves and pineapple farms. Life was simple, slow, and centered around the land and river. The island even got its name from an early settler—likely someone named Merritt—though like many old Florida stories, the details are a bit fuzzy.

Then came the 1960s… and everything changed.

The U.S. government chose Merritt Island as the home of the Kennedy Space Center, turning farmland into launchpads and bringing the world’s attention to Florida’s Space Coast. From here, missions like the Apollo 11 Moon Landing helped put a man on the moon.

Today, Merritt Island is one of the few places where you can watch a rocket launch in the morning and spot dolphins or manatees in the afternoon at the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge.

It’s not just a place to live—it’s a place with a story.

👉 Thinking about calling the Space Coast home? Let’s find you a spot where history and lifestyle meet.
