Apollo Astronaut Training In Our Waters

Long before astronauts walked on the Moon, they trained right here in the waters around Brevard County.

During the Apollo era, NASA used the Indian River Lagoon and nearby Atlantic Ocean for survival and recovery training because the underwater environment helped simulate the disorientation and weightlessness astronauts would experience in space. Crews practiced emergency procedures, capsule exits, and ocean recovery operations off the Space Coast before launching from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station.

Many people think of rockets when they think about Brevard County, but the water played a major role in America’s journey to the Moon. Astronauts trained in the same waterways where locals boat, fish, paddleboard, and watch dolphins today.

It’s just another reminder that living on the Space Coast means living in one of the most historically unique places in America — where space history isn’t locked away in museums… it’s part of everyday life.
