10 things Floridians do that Northerners may never completely understand.
1. We check the weather constantly.Especially here on the Space Coast. You might be boating, fishing, golfing, or heading to the beach. Blue skies at noon can turn into a thunderstorm at 12:15.
2. We don’t panic when it rains. Why cancel your plans? Give it 15 minutes. It may be sunny again.
3. Sixty degrees is COLD.Northerners are wearing shorts. Floridians are digging through closets looking for the one jacket they own.
4. We buy hurricane supplies…and eat them before the hurricane arrives.Apparently, emergency Oreos have a very short shelf life.
5. We see an alligator and take a picture. Not too close, of course. We’re Floridians, not idiots.
6. Distance is measured in minutes, not miles.“How far away is it?”“About 20 minutes…unless there’s an accident on I-95.”
7. We own multiple pairs of flip-flops.Beach flip-flops, everyday flip-flops, yard-work flip-flops—and the nice pair for going out to dinner.
8. Bugs don’t surprise us anymore. The question isn’t, “What was that?” It’s, “How big was it?”
9. We complain about snowbirds—even though many of us used to be one.I’m originally from New Jersey, so I realize there may be some hypocrisy involved here.
10. On the Space Coast, we stop what we’re doing to watch rockets.Someone says, “There’s a launch!” and everybody walks outside and looks toward the sky. After a while, you almost forget how incredible that is.
Florida living takes some getting used to. But once you’ve watched a rocket launch in flip-flops while keeping one eye on an afternoon thunderstorm and the other on an alligator…
Congratulations. You’re officially a Floridian.
